Automatic IE remover for windows98 v0.1

IERemove01.inf

by Shane brooks, author of 98lite - win98 *without* IE.
//www.wam.umd.edu/~ssbrooks/98lite/

THIS IS A BETA PRODUCT. IT IS NOT FINISHED - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Having said that - IERemove01.inf only deletes Files and Registry Keys
(apart from the shell swapover). There is no fancy Registry magic here,
and if you get an undesired result, then a reinstallation of windows98
over the top will rebuild any missing features that this file removes.

NOTE: THIS FILE WILL UNCONDITIONALLY DELETE THE FOLLOWING DIRECTORIES
WITHOUT ASKING FIRST. BACKUP ANY PERSONAL FILES YOU MAY WANT TO KEEP

program filesinternet explorer
program filesuninstall information"
%windir%application datamicrosoftinternet explorer"
%windir%application datamicrosoftwelcome"
%windir%catroot"
%windir%cookies"
%windir%desktoponline services
%windir%downloaded program files"
%windir%favorites"
%windir%history"
%windir%java"
%windir%subscriptions"
%windir%temporary internet files"
%windir%web"

You'll need you win95 CD, or have a directory on your hard disk containing
the 5 win95 files: Explorer.exe, shell32.dll, comdlg32.dll, notepad.exe,
wordpad.exe.

Unzip the INF file to any location - right click - choose "Install".
You will be prompted to for your win95 files (CDROM or HDD directory).
You should also be prompted to reboot after setup finishes.
Make sure you do this reboot ASAP.

This removal is very rigorous in that many ActiveX controlls are removed
entirely from the disk and registry. My current assumption is that any
software requiring any of these ActiveX controls could be reinstalled and
will put back the control it needs. This may be naive and I may "relax"
the removal process to leave more behind if users report serious problems.

The INF file is over 1000 lines long! - you can open it up in a text editor
and scan it to see what it removes. Let me know if you see something that
you *know* is required for a specific application.

Please provide any feedback you can - did it work OK? did anything break?
no matter how small. I especially want to know if you use any software
that claims to require win98 (e.g. outlook98, money98), or if you install IE5
after running this patch (were all the required ActiveX controls replaced?).
Also tell me if you tried this on a clean system or on an older setup that
contained many applications, and that is likely to be a little on the messy
side from multiple installations and removals of software.

This file will clean out a bunch of registry information for 98lite users also.

Known issues:
Task shedular icon seems to disappear from the system tray sometimes.
(but the scheduler keeps running)
MyDocuments icon on desktop stops working when IE is removed (a more general
problem with removing IE - not isolated to this removal file)
