WINUP-Err Msg: "Cannot Display Page"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows Update

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When visiting the Windows Update Product Catalog, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot Display Page

CAUSE
Periodically the Windows Update Team refreshes the Windows Update site with new controls or site architecture. When this happens, you may still have an earlier version of the site control in your browser cache or in the WindowsUpdate folder, which may cause this error message to occur.

RESOLUTION
Empty out the Temporary Internet Files and History and delete the configuration files within the WindowsUpdate folder. Then remove and reinstall the Windows Update ActiveX control. The WindowsUpdate folder and the ActiveX control will be restored using new copies of their files from the Windows Update Site once the Product Catalog can be accessed successfully.

Clear your Temporary Internet Files and History and Remove the CV3 Class Control
Click Tools.

Click Internet Options and then click the General Tab.

In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete Files.

Also in the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Settings buttons and then the View Objects button.

Right-click the CV3 Class file, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm.
(If you cannot locate the CV3 Class file, continue with the steps for removing the Windows Update Controls. )

Add Windows Update to the Trusted Sites Zone
In order for the ActiveX files to correctly pass to your computer, you must have your Security settings in Internet Explorer set to Medium or lower. Only the Web sites listed in Internet Explorer's Trusted Sites Zone will be affected by the lowering of Security settings. Your current security settings for all other Web sites in the Internet Zone will remain as they are currently configured.
At Internet Explorer's main toolbar, click Tools and then click Internet Options.

Click the Security Tab.

Click the Trusted Sites Zone icon.

Click the Sites button.

Clear the check in the "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" box, type //*.microsoft.com and then click the Add button.

Click OK.

Click the Custom Level button and select Enable for the following items:

Download signed ActiveX controls.

Download unsigned ActiveX controls.

Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe.

Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.

Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.

Click OK, and then click OK again to exit Internet Properties.

Remove Windows Update Controls
Note: Before unregistering and removing the site controls, you will need to close Internet Explorer so that the controls are no longer in use.
Unregister the wuv3is.dll file.

Click Start, then click Run, and in the Open box type regsvr32 /u wuv3is.dll

Delete the wuv3is.dll.

Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me: The file is located in the System directory.

Windows NT and Windows 2000: The file is located in the System32 directory.

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

Windows Me and Windows 2000: Click Start, point to Search and then click Files or Folders.

In the Named box type wuv3is.dll.

When the file is found, right-click it and then click Delete.

Delete the contents of the Windows Update folder using the instructions below:

Click Start, then click Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

In the left pane, double-click the Program Files folder.

In the left pane, double-click the WindowsUpdate folder.

In the right pane, highlight wuhistv3.log and click Edit, and then click Invert Selection.

Press the Delete key (or right-click and select Delete). Click Yes to confirm.

Note: Deleting the wuhistv3.log file will clear the entire Windows Update download history. This is not recommended as you will have no record of previous downloads. The above steps delete all files with the exception of wuhistv3.log.

Note: If you are unable to locate the files listed in this article while searching Windows Explorer, verify that your Folder Options are set to "Show All Files." To set this option:
Double-click My Computer.

Windows 95 or Windows 98: Click View and then click Folder Options.

Windows NT or Windows 2000: Click Tools and then click Folder Options.

Click the View tab. In the Hidden files section, make sure the "Show all files" or "Show hidden files and folders" button is selected.

Click OK.
