ADSL-2

The Next Generation in Broadband
The newest standards completed and endorsed by the ITU call for a revision of international ADSL standards. Although technically called G.dmt.bis and G.lite.bis at the ITU, the common name has become better known as ADSL2.
ADSL2+, sometimes called ADSL+, is an extension of the new ADSL2 standard that is being approved. It is capable of doubling the downstream data rates to over 20 Mbps over loops shorter than 8,000 feet. This standard is expected to leap into the competitive broadband landscape with VDSL since they are both fully interoperable with existing ADSL deployments, and will perform both ADSL and ADSL2 modes of operation.
This is essential to current ADSL providers because it enables current providers of broadband to continue to use their legacy ADSL equipment.
The ADSL2/ADSL2+ standard adds features and functionality targeted at improving performance and interoperability, and adds support for new applications, services, and deployment scenarios:
Reduced power consumption -- through new power down modes based upon usage
Overcoming narrowband interference over long lines -- through improved modulation efficiency
Dramatic improvements in diagnostics -- provide tools for troubleshooting during and after installation, as well as performance monitoring while in service
Real-time performance monitoring -- provide information on line quality and noise conditions at both ends of the line. It can also be used to determine if a customer can be offered higher data rate services.
Bonding Capability -- allows flexibility of downstream data rates to allow carriers to adjust their cost structure based upon services offers .
ST is actively involved in the development of standards compliant products that will be fully compatible with new standards like ADSL2 and ADSL2+. For more information on the new standards and ADSL2/2+ products.

SHDSL

PeakSHDSL, High Performing, SHDSL Chipset for Multi-channel Applications

The PeakSHDSL solution from ST is the industry's highest performing, symmetrical high-bit rate digital subscriber line (SHDSL) chipset for multi-channel applications. The solution consists of an octal digital chip (STLC80815) and two quad analog transceivers (STLC60444) and is capable of achieving a rate of 2.3 mbps over a distance of 15.5 kilo feet. This is a 25% increase over existing products on the market.

In addition to market leading reach characteristics, the PeakSHDSL solution achieves extremely low power consumption (723mW) through a combination of innovative algorithms integrated with a proprietary architecture, along with a unique silicon process, and an AFE with a unique active termination circuit. This low power consumption makes the ST solution one the lowest power consuming products on the market.

Innovative Design = Reduced Power Consumption

The ST solution was developed using a proprietary architecture based on low power DSP cores. The cores use innovative algorithms that perform unique equalization and echo cancellation are optimized to reduce the required processing power of the chipset, thereby achieving extremely low power consumption.

Additional contributing features include the development of a unique silicon process (to include custom multipliers and a proprietary dynamic clock disabling mechanism) and an analog front-end circuit with a unique active termination circuit makes the ST solution one the lowest power consuming products on the market.

A Single Layout for ADSL and SHDSL

Experience as the market leader in ADSL has enabled us to offer a product that will ensure reduced time to market. By designing a single layout that is pin-to-pin and API compatible to ST's CopperWing ADSL solution, you can apply one design for multiple applications, thereby reducing the need for a complete redesign.

VDSL

ST's ZipperWire¢â VDSL solutions provide you with the bandwidth you need, and the expertise to build it. ST has developed a truly complete home and business communications package that brings up to100Mbit/s bandwidth with the option of ADSL interoperability. The possibilities are endless, resulting in enabling new high-bandwidth multimedia services for residential and business users.

ST's VDSL solution uses a Zipper-DMT¢â approach which has many advantages, including:

superior flexibility
high duplex efficiency

compatibility with existing services

Zipper-DMT¢â approach is based on discrete multitone (DMT) modulation and uses different DMT-tones in the up and the downstream directions. Compared to other VDSL techniques, the Zipper-DMT approach uses a form of Digital Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) where different frequencies can be dynamically allocated to downstream or upstream directions of transmission, thereby reducing the need for complex analog filters. These filters are often costly and waste an otherwise valuable spectrum. With the Zipper-DMT technique this dynamic allocation is possible without these complex filters, thereby reducing costs.
Zipper-DMT¢â approach

ZipperWire¢â Chipset Solution

ZipperWire chipset solution is a compact two-chip solution including the datapump and analog front-end:
the STLC90115 is a single channel VDSL datapump (DMT transceiver) that includes both the ATM and Ethernet Interface along with embedded modem control software.
the STLC90114 single channel VDSL analog front-end processes the VDSL signal from line driver to datapump in both TX and RX directions, performing both D/A and A/D functions as well as proper filtering and amplification.

The chipset solution is designed for use in both Central Office and Customer Premises Equipment environments. Additional features include:
Symmetric or asymmetric modes
High resolution, high-speed analog to digital and digital to analog conversion

Integrated Programmable Gain Amplifier and low pass filters
In the receiver section, a low noise amplifier brings the signal level to best fit to the ADC input dynamic range
3.3v - 500mW power consumption
