A young vice president was appointed by the board of a bank to replace

the retiring president and founder. He made an appointment to visit

with the grouchy retiree to seek his advice. "Mr. Smith, how can I be

successful in this job ?" "Young man," said the elderly man, "the key to

your success are 'right decisions!'" "Thank you, sir. But how can I be

sure I am making right decisions ?" "Experience !" A long silence

followed. "That is helpful," said the young man, "but how do I get the

right experience ?" "Wrong decisions !" responded the elderly man.


은행 이사회는 퇴임하는 창업주 행장의 후임으로 젊은 부행장을 임명했다. 그는

시무룩한 전임자를 찾아가서 충고를 듣기로 했다. "이 자리에서 성공하려면 어

떻게 해야 합니까 ?" "젊은이, 성공의 열쇠는 '올바른 결정'이라네"라고 노인

은 말하는 것이었다. "감사합니다. 하면 올바른 결정인지 아닌지를 어떻게 확인

합니까 ?" "경험을 통해서지 !" 한참 침묵이 이어졌다. "좋은 말씀 들려 주셨습

니다. 하면 올바른 경험은 어떻게 얻게 되는 것입니까 ?" "그릇된 경험을 통해

서야 !"라고 노인은 대답했다.
